FREE ST. Patrick's Day Idioms and Test Prep Fun

http://teach123school.blogspot.com/

Are you ready for some St. Patrick's Day fun that also helps with test prep?  Best of all it is FREE!

Hats off to Figurative Language can be used as seat work or set up with a center with the directions sign above.

There are 3 different hats about a pot like the one above.

There are 3 green themed idioms like the one above.  Students will write the meaning, use it in a sentence, and illustrate the sentence.

There are also 2 hat themed interactive journal printables included.  One has hat themed idioms written on the hats.  Students will write the definition under the hats.

The other hat is open-ended so you can personalize it to fit your students' needs.

This is your lucky day!  These activities are FREE!

Syllable Thumpers

Have you given your class a quiz so you will know your students' learning style and multiple intelligence?  There are many different tests out there.  Here are a few:

When I plan lessons, I try to incorporate as many of the learning styles and multiple intelligences as possible so that I will meet my students' needs.  When I introduce syllables to my students, I like to use syllable thumpers.  We make thumpers out of oatmeal containers or containers that are the similar size and shape.  We decorate them.  We thump on our container when we count syllables.  This is a little noisy, but students love it!

I just finished a Syllable Thumper Center packet that is patriotic themed.  This would be a great addition to your Presidents' Day lessons.

Included in this packet are:

  • 4 syllable cards
  • 18 picture cards that students will sort

Two different response sheets are included so you can differentiate.

There are two different pages that students can choose from to decorate their syllable thumper.

A parent note asking for supplies is also included.

Read, Read, Read! - Pets

http://teach123school.blogspot.com/

As teachers we know how important feedback is to help our students grow and strengthen their skills.  Feedback is just as important when you write curriculum.  I appreciate it when teachers take the time to tell me what works with my lessons so I will continue to add those elements to my packets.  A special shout out to those of you who take the time to leave detailed feedback when you download free or purchased lessons on TPT.  Sometimes teachers email me with tips and ideas for my lessons.  I keep a list on a bulletin board in my office of all of those tips and ideas that you share with me.  I hope to eventually incorporate them into future lessons.

This new series of packets that I am beginning is called "Read, read, read" because your students will have many different opportunities to read the 8 sentences that this packet is based on.  I am starting this series because of two different suggestions that I heard from quite a few teachers.

FIRST IDEA:
I have had quite a few bilingual teachers ask me if there was a Spanish version of my Sentence Shuffle Centers available.  Unfortunately, before this series, I had to tell them no.   (Please note:  If you are not a bilingual teacher, you can easily leave out the Spanish sentences and still complete all of these activities.)

Included in this packet is the English and Spanish version of  Sentence Shuffle Center: Pets.
  • 24 English word phrase cards (colorful)
  • 24 English word phrase cards (black and white)
  • 24 Spanish word phrase cards (colorful)
  • 24 Spanish word phrase cards (black and white)
Students sort the cards by color or frame around the words (for black and white version).  Then they pick one card from each stack to make a sentence.  They arrange the cards to make a sentence.  Read it and decide if it is real and nonsense.  If they finish early they may shuffle the cards and begin again.

**The Spanish and English cards have different fonts.

You can also have your students match the English and Spanish sentences.

When they finish reading, they will complete a writing assignment.  There are 3 different assignments included.

SECOND IDEA:

The other tip I am beginning with this series is to include visual supports.

The 8 sentences that are in Sentence Shuffle Center are used in this  "Read, Read, Write" center.  Students will match the sentences to the correct picture.  When they finish, they will choose one picture to write either a sentence or story on the paper above.

The answers are included.  This center is self-checking.

Students can also use the cards to play a memory game. (Please note:  If you are not a bilingual teacher, you can easily leave out the Spanish sentences and still complete all of these activities.)

Students will read the 8 sentences in the "Just My Size" book.  They may either illustrate the book or color, cut, and glue the correct picture from the "Picture Match" page.

My Sentence Shuffle Centers are sold individually for $4.  With this packet, you get 2 Sentence Shuffle Centers (Spanish & English) plus Read, Read, Write and Picture Match for $5.95.

Christmas - FREE sample

http://teach123school.blogspot.com/

Do you follow my Facebook page?  If so, you are probably familiar with my Buggy for Reading packets because that was one of my recent freebies.  I just finished a Christmas themed Buggy for Reading packet.  It is on the first grade reading level.

This packet contains:

Five reading assignments are included that you will use when you meet with your small groups.  You will rate your students' fluency at the bottom of the page.  Send the page home for homework.  The parents will rate their child's fluency the next two times that they read it.

When your students have finished reading all 5 pages and returned their homework, give them the happy note above.  You can have a FREE copy of it.

The Sentence Shuffle activity can be used as a small group lesson or as a literacy center.  Students cut apart the sentence, rearrange the words into sentences, and practice reading the sentences.

Buggy for Writing is an extension assignment for the Sentence Shuffle lesson.  Students may choose one of the sentences to glue on this page, copy the sentence, and illustrate it.

Students will circle the first letter with a green crayon, circle the last punctuation mark with a red crayon, trace, and copy the words on the Write On! assignment.  This can set up as a writing center or sent home for homework.

These 18 cards can be used a variety of ways.  Use them to introduce new words during your small group lesson.  Make two copies of the pages and make them into a memory game.  Copy these pages, put them on a shower curtain ring to make a personal word wall.  Students would love the hands-on aspect of having their own personal holiday word wall!

Celebration Around the World - Hanukkah

Are you planning a Celebrations Around the World Unit?  No unit would be complete without studying Hanukkah.  What better time to study it than now since Hanukkah began on Thursday.

I am very excited about the new Hanukkah packet that I just finished.

Your students will strengthen their reading fluency while reading facts about Hanukkah. After making and reading sentences, students will complete a writing assignment. There are 3 different assignments to choose from so you can differentiate this assignment.

There are 3 different printables to use with your interactive journals.  Printables include:
  • Facts about Hanuakkah
  • Hanukkah vocabulary
  • Hanukkah:  Beginning, Middle, and End (can be used with any Hanukkah book)

These mini books work great with your small group.  Plus you can send them home for additional practice.
